The inaugural #VALATechCamp, run by VALA, partnered with Linux Australia to deliver a rich and varied two-day conference. As part of the conference, I delivered a one-hour API workshop – Application Programming Interfaces. The workshop covered the following learning objectives:

  • Understanding the basics of the HTTP protocol (the request-response lifecycle, and common HTTP error codes)
  • Understanding Representational State Transfer (ReST) – including the properties of ReST such as being able to update individual resources without affecting an entire system, and the ability to abstract lower level data structures
  • Understanding key terminology related to APIs such as API keys, and common data formats such as JSON and XML
  • Understanding the key steps to planning and developing simple tools based on APIs
  • Understanding where to go next to start building tools based on APIs, including API helper applications

Far from being boring, the presentation used analogies and engaging metaphors to bring ordinarily dry content to life.
