Based on my role as the Site Lead for GovHack Geelong in 2015 and 2016, I was invited to co-present at #MAVtech18 alongside Acting Manager of Digital, Information and Technology at City of Greater Geelong, Matthew Szymczak on Geelong’s transformation from data hacks to smart cities.

We framed the presentation using a maturity model for open data;

  • Level 1: ad hoc – lack of data
  • Level 2: repeatable – hack the data
  • Level 3: defined – track the data
  • Level 4: managed – the knack of data
  • Level 5: optimized – data backbone

and used several examples of Geelong’s transformation to illustrate the journey.
