Based on my role as the Site Lead for GovHack Geelong in 2015 and 2016, I was invited to co-present at #MAVtech18 alongside Acting Manager of Digital, Information and Technology at City of Greater Geelong, Matthew Szymczak on Geelong’s transformation from data hacks to smart cities.
We framed the presentation using a maturity model for open data;
- Level 1: ad hoc – lack of data
- Level 2: repeatable – hack the data
- Level 3: defined – track the data
- Level 4: managed – the knack of data
- Level 5: optimized – data backbone
and used several examples of Geelong’s transformation to illustrate the journey.

Lack of data, hack the data, track the data, the knack of data, to the data backbone. Love the framing from @KathyReid at Greater Geelong. #MAVTech18
